Tag, Enhance, Reward: How Farmers Are Earning from Livestock Identification

Editorial

For most Kenyan farmers, livestock tagging has been an expense — something you do when the county government requires it, offering little in return. Digilivestock's Tag Enhancement Reward (TER) model flips that script entirely. Now, tagging your animals is the first step in a process that generates real, tangible value.

How the TER Model Works

The Tag Enhancement Reward system is built on a simple but powerful premise: every livestock identification event creates value, and that value should flow back to the farmer. Here is how it works in practice:

1

Tag

A Digilivestock agent or veterinary professional visits the farm and fits each animal with a unique, tamper-proof digital ear tag or neck band. The farmer's details and each animal's information are registered in the platform via the mobile app.

2

Enhance

Once tagged, the animal's digital profile becomes a living record. It can be enhanced over time with health check data, vaccination records, breeding information, and valuation updates — increasing the animal's documented value.

3

Reward

Through the Digilivestock platform, tagged livestock accrue reward points. These points can be redeemed for services, products, or converted to value — creating a direct financial incentive for participation.

4

Grow

With documented, identified livestock, farmers unlock access to insurance products, credit facilities, premium markets, and more — all of which were previously unavailable without formal identification records.

Real Impact on the Ground

The TER model is already showing results across our pilot counties. Farmers who previously had no documentation for their livestock are now building comprehensive digital portfolios. In Nakuru County alone, the response has been overwhelming — with farmers actively seeking out Digilivestock agents to register their animals.

"Before Digilivestock, if someone stole my cow, I had no proof it was mine. Now each of my animals has an ID that is linked to my name and my phone. And I earn rewards on top of that. It is a game changer."

Beyond Individual Farmers

The TER model does not just benefit individual farmers. It creates a ripple effect across the entire livestock value chain:

  • Agents and vets earn commissions for every farmer they register and every animal they tag, creating a sustainable income stream for rural entrepreneurs.

  • Distributors who supply tags and equipment to agents build profitable businesses while expanding the platform's reach to every corner of the country.

  • Insurance companies gain access to reliable data on identified animals, enabling them to design livestock insurance products for underserved populations.

  • County governments benefit from a digitized livestock registry that supports disease surveillance, movement control, and economic planning.

Getting Started

Joining the TER program is straightforward. Farmers can contact a Digilivestock agent in their area or call our offices directly. Agents and veterinary professionals interested in joining the network can apply through our Join Us page. The tagging process is quick, non-invasive, and can typically cover an entire herd in a single visit.

In a sector where farmers have long been asked to pay for services that benefit others, the TER model represents a fundamental shift. It puts value creation back in the hands of the people who matter most — the livestock owners themselves.
